If a 13 year old boy swims 4 hours per day (5 am - 7 am & 5 pm - 7 pm) for 5 days each week, is that too much training?

4 hours per day is pretty typical for 14-17-year-olds, so it does not seem out of line to me.  A detailed answer would require more information.  Does he do that schedule EVERY day (i.e., 7 days a week)?

Is he having any problems that led you to ask this question (academics, physical, appetite, sleep)?

So, it sounds like it is ok for the 13 year old boy? On the other hand, it's rather brutal for the parents that work late yet have to play chauffeur so early in the morning to get him to practice. As long as it's not hurting him, they will continue to support him with the early schedule.
